Programs We Offer:
Whether your child wants to be a figure skater, a hockey player, or a recreational skater, strong skating skills are essential. The Skate Canada skating programs provide a solid foundation in skating fundamentals.
Proper Equipment:
Video on proper equipment: Proper Equipment for CanSkate
Proper equipment is essential to success! Please ensure that your skater is dressed properly for skating.
Skaters joining our CanSkate program or new to STARSkate should have the following equipment:
1. CSA approved helmet: we do recommend buying a new helmet as these expire!
- The helmet fit should be snug
- Hair should not be in a high ponytail under the helmet… this interferes with fit
- Face mask/cages are optional
- Both the strap and helmet should be adjustable
- Stickers should not be placed on the helmet

2. Proper fitting Figure or Hockey skates. We do not recommend plastic or adjustable skates. Most important piece of equipment, they should be snug but not too tight and blades should be sharpened once a month or 2 months if they aren't used often.

3. Proper clothing -layers are best, and warm clothing. We do not recommend snowsuits. Avoid clothing that is too long or has anything dangling that could get caught on other skaters, stuck under skates or fall off. Consider Long Johns with jogging pants and a light waterproof pant over top and a thermal shirt with a long sleeved t-shirt and sweater for the top and adding a jacket and pants that are water resistant will help your skater stay warm during the session. Our rink does get very cold, so most important we want your little skater to stay warm!
Full hockey gear is not recommend, it restricts movement that kids need to learn the basics of skating but elbow pads and shin pads are fine!
4. Gloves or mittens - mandatory
Will protect the skater's hands and keep them warm throughout the session.
Financial Assistance:
We are a family in financial need but would like our child/children to participate in sport. What can we do?
We understand that some families need extra assistance to ensure their child/children are able to participate in sports.
We offer payment plans upon request and families can also apply to KidSport, this organization helps families pay for registration costs.
You can find more information about KidSport here.
